sweet potato bonfire, and first frost

If you don't read anything else, please note these 2 things: 1. we are not having any more pot-luck dinners this season (sorry for all confusion). 2. Our sweet potato party was quite nice (thanks everyone!)

Monday night, I thought there might be a chance of frost, so I picked a peck of peppers in the dark after my day at wheatsfield, and brought the little dwarf fig tree into the shed before snuggling up under my super-warm sleeping bag. Tuesday awoke cool, but not frosty, so I thought I'd been a little silly, and I didn't even worry Tuesday night. The weather radio said that there would be frost in southern minnesota - but i guess they meant central iowa. This morning, it was hard to get out of the sleeping bag, because I believe it was 30 degrees in the RV - it definitely was outside, as the beautiful lacy frost on the grass, the watermelons, and sweet potatoes attested.

This all means that the season is winding to a close, and it is time to plant cover crops and surrender crops to the cold. The tomatoes are over, as are the melons, cucumbers, summer squash. We'll see in a few days how the peppers handled it. the brussel sprouts are coming into their glory, and the cabbages and greens are loving the weather. We will probably have about 2 more weeks of delivering veggies to all our eaters.

Despite all confusion, and previous announcements contrary, I have decided to not have any more Friday night pot-lucks this season. Basically, it's getting dark really early, and we hardly have time to eat dinner, let alone have a discussion and do the dishes. Also, this friday looks really gloomy and damp. And did i mention that it's getting colder? Thanks everyone for coming to the sweet potato party - I've attached a picture that martin took (and there are about 8 more in Martin's photo gallery)
