The Electronic University Roundtable Discussion Series

Would you like to learn more about the Catholic Worker Movement?
Join us in a series of virtual lessons and discussions about the core values of the catholic worker movement.  this is a great  opportunity to learn more about the catholic worker movement and to get to know people from other communities.  You don't need to sign up for all the sessions (though i think they will all be great!)

SUGAR CREEK - also, i think there will be a midwest catholic worker gathering/retreat this year (IN a normal, non-pandemic year, there are usually a number of regional gatherings that happen)  I think it will be at sugar creek, near dewitt iowa, the weekend of Sept 17-19.  this is a wonderfully fun and inspiring gathering, so consider going and get it on your calendar!

THE ELECTRONIC UNIVERSITY ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION SERIES:
Few would have imagined that 88 years in, the Catholic Worker would remain a vibrant part of global efforts for a more just world. But those of us anchored in its witness, rooted in its work, are not surprised.
That said, the world and work have changed immensely since 1933. As Catholic Workers around the world have labored to enflesh this tradition in a way that Christ might recognize, we have learned from failure, from the insights of movement partners, and from the ever-deepening political analysis of historically discarded communities.

Where do we come from? And where are we going - both as a movement and as individual communities? Join us as we examine our roots, consider lessons learned, share our own insights, and expand the work we are doing so that the Worker might continue becoming a place that resembles the Kin-dom on earth as it is in heaven.

For the next five months, we will gather (virtually) one Sunday each month for a 90-minute roundtable discussion that will offer presentations to stay rooted in our history followed by small group breakouts to share the specific wisdom we each have gained from living out our work in all of our unique contexts. Attendance at all sessions is NOT a requirement to participate, so please join for all you can. These sessions will begin at 1PM (PDT) / 2 PM (MDT) / 3PM (CDT) / 4PM (EDT). We then encourage you to take these conversations back to your communities to consider what they mean in light of your specific work.

SESSION 1 - JUNE 13: ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS:      As we consider how best to draw from our roots and guide our continued work, the Roundtable Discussion is an invaluable tool for the clarification of thought. Join us as we consider the many, different ways Roundtables have looked and draw on the collective wisdom of those of us who have used it to shape our works and spaces.

SESSION 2 - JULY 11: THE FOUNDERS     Though the names of Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin are well known in our movement, there are always new parts of their stories to uncover and from which to learn. Invited guests Kate Hennessy and Lincoln Rice will move us to consider stories about, insights from, and questions explored by our founders as fodder for thinking about all that brought us into this work.

SESSION 3 - AUGUST 15: HOSPITALITY      Hospitality creates a space where dignity can be seen and justice might start, therefore it is at the heart of the Worker. Movement elders Willa Bickham and Brendan Walsh will offer stories and learnings from their years of hospitality in Baltimore, and Kateri Boucher will share about their experience restarting Catholic Worker hospitality in Detroit.
Session 4 - September 12: TBD

Session 5 - October 10: TBD
Though the topics for the first three sessions have been decided, please join us in Session 1 to help us consider what our final sessions might be.

If you have questions, feel free to check these Frequently Asked Questions or reply to this email. If you know of other Catholic Worker communities you want to make sure get the invite, please forward this email or send this link. But whatever you do, please make sure you register here.
