Written by Jacob for 2019 internship project
It has been an exciting summer on the farm, and three amazing interns have been present for it, learning, teaching, living and working at Mustard Seed. Here are some facts about our fantastic team!
Caitlin
Caitlin is an intern from Chicago (not the suburbs). She is passionate about the environment, good food, wild plants, national parks, and living peacefully. She enjoys long walks (especially with her dog, Woody), skiing, roller blading, and yoga. Her favorite color is currently yellow (but it fluctuates). Her favorite things to do on the farm are picking wild plants, reading, and team meals. Her super power is to identify every plant, and most evenings, you’ll find her in the vineyard killing Japanese beetles. Earlier this month, Caitlin led a roundtable discussion on local, seasonal, and native plants. She invited the participants to consider the benefits and drawbacks of a globalized, industrial food system and showcased several edible wild plants she harvested on the farm.
Blake
Blake is an intern from Okoboji, Iowa. He is passionate about food sovereignty and believes that everyone has a right to grow and eat their own food. He supports agricultural education and likes to learn about different agricultural systems and vegetarian diets. His goal is to run a marathon in every state. He likes the color viridian, collecting and cleaning chicken eggs and picking berries. You will find Blake hanging out by the mulberries. His super power is the ability to fall asleep whenever he wants. Last month, Blake led a roundtable discussion on holistic health. He educated the participants about maintaining all areas of a healthy life and initiated a dialogue in which the role of personal technologies health was a prominent topic.
Jacob
Jacob comes from central Illinois and will post a picture of himself soon. His passions are playing viola, reading, writing, and cooking. His favorite farm activities are writing and rogueing thistles and other large weeds. He hangs out by the prairie a lot. His super power is to make everyone laugh with his puns. On Thursday, July 25th, he is going to to lead a roundtable about the connection between environmental degradation and human conflict. More details can be found on the season schedule.
