WE FINALLY GOT RAIN! Between 3 rain events the past few days, we got 1.35 inches of rain. This is the largest rainfall (in a 36 hour period) that we have gotten all year. This information expresses that: 1. This has been an incredibly dry year and 2, we are incredibly grateful for this rain. it might have saved a few of our crops from complete destruction.

Interview with Sara Smith 8/9/17

(Interviewer: Derek Lin)
(Preface: Sara was an intern on the farm this summer as well as a student at ISU. Perhaps you recognize her name from a newsletter she wrote. Or you may have met her at harvest morning. But for those of you who had not met her, here's a glimpse into her time as an intern. As all of our interns were interesting people, I decided to start doing an exit interview on them before they left. So, here's the interview. -Derek)

D: What’s the feeling when you get a harvest box?

Interview with Hannah Galloway 8/4/17

(Interviewer: Derek Lin)

(Preface: Hannah was an intern at the farm this summer as well as a student at Grinnell College. You might know her from a newsletter she wrote. You may have met her at a harvest or at the farmers' market. But for those who had not met her, here's a glimpse into her time on the farm. As all of our interns were interesting people, I decided to start doing an exit interview on them before they left. So without further delay, here's the interview. -Derek)

Rainy Day - 7/26/17

Morning, all. Derek here. It’s raining. Had to take down my tent already, which is a change. I don’t usually take it down until the afternoon, but I’d rather it not be out in the rain all day.

We did some potato harvesting this morning. Digging’s pretty fun. I enjoyed feeling like an archaeologist, digging up items of the past, dusting them off carefully. It’s pretty important that we don’t rub the potatoes too hard as they store worse with part of the skin rubbed off.

An Intern's Experience

One year ago, as a high school graduate from the Chicago suburbs, I could not have guessed the impact attending school in Iowa would have on me. My first semester at Grinnell, I enrolled in a biology class focused on plant reproduction, where I quickly developed an interest in the ethics of agriculture.
